Overview
Though strategy is often used as a synonym for planning,
classical strategy is in many ways the opposite of planning.
Planning
work within our span of control. Classical strategy works
in the competitive world where we must react to events
we didn't plan.
Front-line strategy starts with the
humble acceptance that the larger world is
beyond our control.
People compete. Limited resources are contested. Competing
plans collide, producing results that no one plans.
What works in this environment?
Instead of a series
of planned steps, the methods of front-line
strategy analyze strategic positions,
advance those positions, and provide specific responses to to meet
different types of challenges.
Both planning and
competitive strategy are necessary. The problem is that
our focus on planning have undermined and overshadowed our understanding of
competitive strategy.
