Strategy Facts

Portfolio managers John Baldi, Michael Clarfeld, Scott Glasser and Peter Vanderlee have worked together since 2008 and bring a long tenure of experience managing dividend-focused strategies.

The Strategy focuses exclusively on dominant, well-run businesses that pay a dividend or have the potential to do so.

The team does not deviate from a disciplined investment process focused on income growth.

Literature & Perspectives

  • Dividend Strategy
3Q19 Commentary: Dividend growers in traditionally non-income sectors drove strong relative performance.
  • Why Dividend Growth Matters as Yields Fall
PMs John Baldi and Peter Vanderlee join Jeff Schulze to discuss how dividend stocks offer income and growth in a low-yield environment.
  • Dividend Strategy
2Q19 Commentary: Equities posted solid returns, though the new nationalism underpinning current trade conflicts is unlikely to dissipate soon.
  • Low Downside Capture from Dividends Adds Up
A detailed examination of downside capture over turbulent periods helps explain the value of a conservative, dividend-focused approach.
  • Dividend Strategy
1Q19 Commentary: We expect a diversified portfolio of idiosyncratic investment ideas to provide ballast as economic indicators waver.

Investment Process

  • Maintain a strong focus on current income and income growth
  • Identify strong, well run businesses. Seek companies with predictable revenues and superior margins and return on investment
  • Avoid deep cyclicals, turnarounds and enterprises that cannot be reasonably analyzed

A dividend focus has led to competitive long-term returns.

ClearBridge Investments, LLC ("ClearBridge") is a wholly owned subsidiary of Legg Mason, Inc. ("Legg Mason"). In June 2008, ClearBridge combined this business with its retail business to form a single GIPS firm. As of April 1, 2013 and January 1, 2016, ClearBridge's affiliates, Global Currents Investment Management, LLC, and ClearBridge, LLC, respectively, have become part of the ClearBridge GIPS firm. The ClearBridge Dividend Strategy composite invests in large and mid cap U.S. equities across a wide variety of industries and sectors. The portfolio managers seek dividend income, growth of dividend income and long-term capital appreciation. Investments may also be made in targeted investments in preferred stock, convertible bonds and REITS. Results are calculated in U.S. dollars. The S&P 500® Index is a broad-based measurement of changes in stock market conditions based on the average performance of 500 widely held common stocks.
